Side note: it's jarring how the swap isn't offered or even mentioned on this new version.
I know they've stripped it back to basics, but they've taken a little step out of the threshold. The 'swap' was there from the very beginning, offered to the first player who no dealt to the end.
And the hypo-swap is wayyy older than people would imagine, first carried out in
March 2006.
Funny you mention that, I was randomly watching the game in question (Candace, 8th March 2006) on YouTube recently. Surprisingly enough the player herself proactively asked for it- when asked if she would have dealt 24k on a £500/75k finish, she said it depended on whether or not she'd have got the swap, saying she'd have no dealt if she did. So then they swapped the boxes to see what would have happened and it turns out she'd have swapped for the £500! Little did we know at the time how reviled the hypo-swap would become...
I understood the first couple of times they didn't offer the swap, because it was on finishes like £5/£50 where offering it could have come across as rubbing salt in the wounds. But in games like today where it's a blue/red finish and the contestant has spoken about a number being important to them, it doesn't sit right that they aren't given the choice to make that swap if they want to.
