After discussion in another thread, it has seriously disturbed me that H thinks the clock in Countdown is not controlled by the presenter!

What about the "flipping" of the conundrum board?

This is a real mystery.

I'm sure Richard said that the pressing of the button is actually an effect... although I may be wrong. however, I do know that the resetting. of the clock is controlled externally...

Des presses a button. Well I learned on Wikipedia so I'm probably wrong. Production team reset it though I would guess, when it speeds on the other side, when off screen.

I'll give that Wikipedia article a look :)
To reset the clock there must be a control behind it or something.... that's gonna be another poll, where is the thing to reset the clock?

  Oh dearie me.

I can solve this mystery. When I went to see Countdown being filmed many moons ago. A certain Greg Scott was the warm up man and he was asked that very question to which he replied.

"The host has a pedal underneath his desk which is linked to an underground chamber. The minions in the underground chamber press a button which beams up to a satellite somewhere over Azerbaijan. This beams a signal back down to the studio which activates the Conundrum board."

I don't know if he was being serious or not.

Oh OK, it's just a guy with a lever

I'm telling you - the whole thing, the Conundrum board flicking, who resets the numbers generator, who puts up a new piece of cardboard for Carol to write on - ALL MAGIC!!!!:D

I envy anyone who's ever gone to watch Countdown being filmed!! :D

I personally think the grey hamster on Des' upper lip is running on a wheel and generating electricity to pwoer the clock's motor!

ALMOST-AN-EDIT:I was about to post and realised that I'd left the l out of-clock! Luckily I noticed just in time.

The conundrum board is on a spindle and someone pushes a lever which tips the board over.

I remember Richard Whitleley showing it on a documentary about quiz shows.
