A few days ago Noel stated that no one knew when they were going to be selected , well , the last Asian/Muslim lady that was selected spent her time in all the shows dressed in a Sari and with the red mark on her forhead, BUT, the day she was randomly selected she was wearing jeans and no red mark !, please can someone explain ?

I hope I'm not speaking out of turn here but I believe the wardrobe dept have "an idea" who might be selected so may have had some influence over this lady's choice of clothes.

When my stepdaughter has the newbie (and I was in the audience) I was thrilled to see she was wearing a top which had originally been mine. I asked if she had chosen it deliberately. "No" she said "but the wardrobe dept like you to wear something eye-catching on your first and last shows" I don't know if you are aware that contestants have to hand over all their outfits at the beginning of their time on the show and are told what to wear for each game?

Generally though, I truly believe that none of the contestants know for certain when they are going to be picked and the flashing-names bit you see at the beginning goes on for muuuuuuuch longer in real life. Very nerve-wracking :eyes:

Hope this helps!

As a contestant, I can tell you that we really, really do not know when we're going to be picked. People are chosen out of "turn" (if you go by number of shows), sometimes really quite surprisingly so. Others are left hanging on way beyond the "average" wait.

They also mess about with your mind, the crew and floor managers all patting you on the back, saying stuff like "oooooh, you're in the zone now!" and all this banter to raise your thoughts that it might be you, but then not pick you for ages. LOL

It's all part of the excitement for the players. And it is an endless source of discussion in the pub!!!

Thanks for that insight.....I still believe that the Asian lady was dressed in jeans and her "Bindi" removed, only on the day she was "randomly selected" so as to make her look a little more "English" for the Audience.

Well, that doesn't make sense, because the wardrobe girls would have had to guess (they don't know when players are picked).

Quite frankly from my experience with them they are keen to make players look their best every show,as are the make-up girls. They are fantastic. They shoot 3 shows a day, and that is three wardrobe changes a day, for 22 players. 66 changes a day for the wardrobe girls! (*Hands out the medals)

And, as has already been pointed out, the clothes worn by contestants are their own, handed in on their arrival in Bristol. So if this lady was wearing jeans and a top, then they would have been clothes that she wore herself anyway. And are you absolutely certain she didn't wear "western" clothing on any other show?

I don't think it matters in any case. The question is do contestants know when they are selected. We do not.

REPLACE JONATHAN ROSS WITH CONSTANCE!!!

When I was in the audience (just for one day) there was an African guy on the wings and for 1 show out of the 3 he wore his traditional robes. He did the same on the day when my OH was there too. I guess those with a "heritage" want to show it off some days but not others

There was also much banter when the lady sitting behind me thought her OH might get picked for the third game. The warm-up man asked if she thoguht he was wearing his best shirt?! She said he had better shirts than that one and guess what? He wasn't picked until the next day :D

Well, I told the girls when I arrived that I had a favourite outifit, and "if" they knew when I would be playing to put me in it.

I was put in it right towards the end of my shows, having not been given it until then, and I was NOT picked.

The outfit I wore for my game was certainly not my best, in my opinion.

So, really, this is all froth.

That would make sense!

There have been some rather odd things regarding the dressing of the contestants... the most "suspicious" one I can rememeber was how Graeme was wearing a kilt on the day he was selected to play. :?

How do you know he wasn't wearing a kilt on some other shows. You hardly ever see a contestant below the waist until they play.

He wasn't just wearing a kilt... he had a suit on and a huge belt thing and it was all visible whilst he was standing on the wings before he was chosen. Look at this post from the show itself - viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8985&p=287544&hilit=kilt#p287544

As H said, it was the full suit he was wearing, the black jacket, white shirt and sporran that are traditionally worn with a kilt. In other shows, I think he just wore regular clothes.

I always find the player's surprise really funny. I can never understand why they find it so surprising, especially if they've been there for ages.

Absolutely. She's way funnier than Jonathon Ross ever was!

  Sporran is what I should've said rather than "belt thing".

As for the original point about Meena (I assume Meena is the player in question) not wearing Eastern clothing etc when she was chosen to play, I can't say I really noticed at the time. I don't think they've done anything like that with other contestants from ethnic minorities, so it's probably just coincidence.

I suppose they may have removed the red mark (bindi) just before she played (as there is a delay between the player being chosen and the game actually starting) so she could make a point of giving out bindis to herself and the others later on in the show (which is what she did).

I think contestants have an idea of the WEEK when they will be chosen to play, judging by (a) how they dress when it gets near their time and (b) family being present in the audience. I don't believe they know exactly when they will be chosen, because I can recall at least one occasion when a contestant said his friend had been in the audience on preceding days but had gone home prior to his being chosen to play.

The contestants have an idea of the filming week they'll record their show in but they have absolutely no idea of the exact date. Sometimes I bet they do guess right. Family being in the audience isn't a clue either as they move them from another part of the audience to the more prominent area for the person's game (if they're there at all). And normally what they're wearing is not an indicator, although there have been one or two times when a contestant looks really smart for their game and you wonder if they knew it'd be them due to being dressed smartly (e.g. Graeme who wore a full suit, sporran and kilt)... hang on I've already mentioned that in this thread.
