The crowd is hyped up, although Irene rather bewilders them with her long conversation about birds... Noel jokes that there's quite a few birds on the wings (camera cuts to Jenni), and Irene says no, not that kind of bird!

Noel reminds Irene about Louise's game...and we're off!

Box 9 (Alan) - £250. Big cheers. 'That's the way to start the New Year!' Unlike the £250,000 that actually started 2006 with this box!!!
Box 3 (Ann) - £1! Noel says at this rate, 2006 is going to be horrendous for the Banker!
Box 11 (Liz) - £100. Crowd well up for this now!
Box 8 (Dave) - £15,000. 'First red of the new year, and it's not too bad!'
Box 1 (Robbie) - £10,000. Noel says 'all told, that was a really good opening round with which to start a new year!'

The Banker wants to remove all memories of last year, and seeing the £10,000 go so early has helped him after Max's game...

Banker's offer:

Irene quickly moves on - NO DEAL.

Box 20 (Pat) - 1p! 'Still nobody in the 1p club!'
Box 16 (Marie) - 10p! 'This is perfection!' Noel cries. 'Savour this, embrace this brilliant board... because we are not going to TOUCH it until after the break!'

The Banker is so grateful to see any prospect of a quarter-millionaire end so soon, he's not going to reduce the offer!

Irene is surprised, but Terry points out the board is 'incredibly stable and very much in your favour', and Irene says NO DEAL.

Round three then. 'Let's pick off some more of those blues!'

Box 5 (Jenni) - £3,000. 'That'll do!'
Box 2 (Terry) - £5,000. Noel says she now needs to take out a blue, but Terry says the £1,000 would do just fine as well...
Box 12 (Julie) - £50! 'There we go!' Irene says she feels happy with this board. The Banker has flashbacks to Andy K with this configuration...

Banker's offer:

Terry says that's still not enough with five boxes higher, Noel points out it's more than Max was ever offered...

Irene says NO DEAL to warm applause.

Noel is surprised at this offer. Terry says that all she needs to do to get a better offer is keep the £100,000, which is 'more than a 60% chance'. Noel says £20,000 and £35,000 are also important on this board and Irene agrees - she says how having three higher than the offer is useful...

...and decides to NO DEAL. Noel says this is the attitude that scares the Banker!

Noel says 'it is imperative that the £100,000 does not go in this round'...

Box 7 (Arlette) - £100,000! 'Lucky for some... unlucky for you.' Irene says she still has the chance to salvage this game...

Irene says she can still win more than she turned down... Terry says the offer is generous and she should consider it as there is a 60% chance the next offer will be less than £1,000... but Irene says NO DEAL!

Noel says it is only right that £20,000 is not found this round...

Box 14 (Gerry) - £20,000! Irene covers her eyes in disbelief. The crowd is utterly silenced. Noel looks stunned too. 'We have to play on...'

The Banker offers a swap - and Irene accepts! She carries Box 15 to the table with her... Noel says it would be utterly cruel if this was £10...

Box 15 contains £10! 17 has £1,000. Noel says that is completely unfair for such a wonderful player to win so little...

Ouch, nice game though, and lovin' the series.

I would have dealt at 3k, but possibly £300, since I wouldn't want to go away with a tenner...

Oh dear. that was looking great at one stage, unlike her real game!! (REALLY looking forward to the next game in this, and also the one in 3 games time. )

Oh I'm looking forward to that one... it's one where I don't have to guess what the player would have done as I can actually play the game on MSN with him!!

Looking back I can't quite believe I had her turn down £12k at eight-box but she turned down an AMO in her real game... (of £800... ) and now I look back it was reasonable to turn it down... I think she may well have done just that but she'd probably have really regretted it, which is what I attempted to imply!
